Berns-Meyer Nature Preserve
State Designated Nature Preserve [#53; 1980]
Berns-Meyer offers a short loop trail through 20 acres of moist woods. The trail has 44 closely spaced stations with markers that correspond to a trail guide that may be available at the registry box. However, the subjects of many markers are no more, having fallen to time and chance. Spring wildflowers are abundant and include trillium, mayapple, and jack-in-the-pulpit, giving way to wild ginger, Solomon’s plume, and jewelweed as the year progresses.
Despite a state highway sign that points the way to the preserve from nearby IN 119, the visitor count seems low. So low, that on my last two visits I lost the trail repeatedly because it was completely obscured by late summer growth. Countless mosquitoes are here during the warmer months, as are other life forms of the biting and stinging variety. Long pants may offer some protection against the formidable stands of stinging nettle and poison ivy and may help reduce blood loss.
