The Wesselman Nature Society describes Howell Wetlands as one of the largest urban wetlands in Indiana. Maybe my predilection for boardwalks clouds my judgment, but I really like this place, even though it’s surrounded by urbanized, occasionally industrial areas. Both the official and unofficial trails allow close inspection of all sorts of interesting things – fish, turtles, frogs, and other animals in the water; emergent vegetation, woods, and even a small upland meadow. If you visit you are likely to have plenty of company, and the property shows signs of heavy usage. Noise from a nearby railroad yard and the muffled but ever-present sounds of road traffic are also negatives.
