Prairie Border is an oak savanna along the northern edge of Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area. There is a sign at the southwest corner of the preserve (by the parking pull-off), but otherwise markings are very scarce. Though I’ve read accounts of one, on my last visit I saw no sign of a trail. No matter. The understory is relatively open (more-or-less depending on the interval since the last controlled burn) and if you’re willing to interact with new growth and a few briars, cross-country navigation is generally pretty easy. Keep your eyes and ears open for a large colony of flashy and noisy red-headed woodpeckers that have set up shop in several trees in the central part of the preserve.
