Seven Pillars

The preserve offers a pleasant-enough walk in the woods, but the best reason for stopping is to view the remarkable geological formations nearby. The combination of geology and the action of the Mississinewa River created a series of stone columns that line an area on the north side of the river. I’m not aware of anything remotely like it anywhere else in Indiana.
In days past, Native Americans used the alcoves formed between these columns for council meetings. There is a viewing area along the river, at the intersection of Mississinewa Road and 400 East, about a half mile past the preserve parking lot. The viewing area is also accessible via the preserve’s trail system.
