Tefft Savanna
Nature Preserve
State Designated Nature Preserve [#55; 1980]
Tefft Savanna. Click to enlarge
Tefft includes an oak savanna that is perhaps wetter than most. The preserve consists of two tracts adjacent to the Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area. County Road 1000 North, a badly rutted track that gets more primitive as it continues to the west, divides the largest and most accessible area. There are no established trails, only what may be some overgrown service drives, so you may find it most convenient to walk into the preserve along 1000 North and make forays north or south into the interior. Stands of oak trees are interspersed with glades prone to seasonal ponding, along with areas that hold water year-round. Use caution, as DNR permits hunting in season.
