Wintergreen Woods
State Designated Nature Preserve [#177; 2001]
Wintergreen Woods Trail. Click to enlarge
Wintergreen Woods is a boreal flatwoods home to several species relatively rare in Indiana, though more common to the north. Paper birch is here, as are Canada mayflower (in spring) and wintergreen, a low evergreen plant that produces one or two red berries late in the year. Many fern and amphibian species are present. I possess an excellent trail brochure, but the lollipop trail it describes has not always been discernable on my visits. The general ambiance is soggy with multiple opportunities for the incautious to get their feet wet. Mosquitoes are generally horrific, and there is usually freeway noise, but the woods are well worth a visit.
