Vermillion Watershed

The Vermillion Watershed drains about 916,000 acres, roughly ninety percent of which are in Illinois. However, the Vermillion River flows toward Indiana and eventually ends up in our state. The North Fork of the Vermillion River rises in southwestern Benton County, and the Middle Branch of the North Fork of the Vermillion rises in the northwestern corner of Warren County, though Warren County's Jordan Creek may be larger as it crosses the state line to join the Vermillion in Illinois. The Vermillion River itself enters Indiana in northern Vermillion County, through which it winds for a few miles before entering the Wabash River near Cayuga.

As noted, the Vermillion River flows into the Wabash River near Cayuga, and the Wabash joins the Ohio River, which in turn flows into the Mississippi River before discharging into the Gulf of Mexico.

The United States Geological Survey has assigned the Vermillion Watershed an 8-Digit Hydrologic Unit Code of 05120109.
