Trillium sessile

Toadshade, or Sessile Trillium

Toadshade is an evocative name for what is perhaps more properly called sessile trillium. Like the purple trillium it has a maroon flower, but the leaves are stemless, and the sepals are arrayed in the same plane as those leaves. Often found in the same habitat as purple trillium, but usually noticeably shorter.
