Background
The City of Columbus operated the 12-acre Columbus Old Municipal Landfill #1 from 1938 to 1966. The unlined landfill reportedly accepted municipal and industrial wastes including solvents, acids, bases, paints, and heavy metals.
What Went Wrong
Contaminants found on the site include acids, bases, and organic solvents. Arsenic, iron, manganese, lead, and total petroleum hydrocarbons were present in the groundwater at low concentrations.
What's Been Done About It
After further investigation, EPA concluded that no further action was necessary at the site. However, because a road (part of Indiana 46) was planned to pass through part of the site, EPA decided that fencing, cap maintenance, and groundwater monitoring were appropriate, along with deed restrictions that control land and water use on the site.
EPA deleted the Columbus Old Municipal Landfill #1 from the National Priority List in January, 2014.
