The Chicago Lake Plain ecoregion is a nearly level coastal strip with beach ridges, marshy swales, sand dunes, and native beach-dune plant communities. Its climate is moderated by Lake Michigan. Source: US EPA

This area is highly urbanized and industrialized, but there are still natural areas accessible to the public. Gibson Woods Nature Preserve in Lake County seems as good a place as any to start. It features remnant dune and swale topography accessible by a system of trails and footbridges, along with a small nature center.
