Ecoregions: Elkhart Till Plains
Elkhart Till Plains Ecoregion, shown in green
The Elkhart Till Plains ecoregion is punctuated by end moraines (rock and sediment deposited at the further extent of a glacier), kames (mounds of sand and gravel deposited in a retreating glacier and left behind when the glacier melted), and lacustrine flats (a flat area formerly occupied by a lake). There are a few kettlehole lakes (lakes left behind when partially buried blocks of ice melted after the glaciers retreated) and sand dunes. Oak-hickory forests and beech maple forests once dominated the area, but now farming is more extensive than woodland. Source: US EPA
