Ecoregions: Lake Country

Lake Country Ecoregion shown in Purple

The Lake Country ecoregion is characterized by many pothole lakes, ponds, marshes, bogs, and clear streams. The well-drained end moraines (rock and sediment deposited at the further extent of a glacier) and kames (mounds of sand and gravel deposited in a retreating glacier and left behind when the glacier melts) once supported oak-hickory forests whereas wetter areas had beech forests or northern swamp forests; the very poorly-drained kettles (lakes or ponds left behind when partially buried blocks of ice melted after the glaciers retreated) had tamarack swamp, cattail-bulrush marshes, or sphagnum bogs. Marshes and woodland remain, but farming dominates, and many lakes are surrounded by closely-packed residences and lake cottages. Source: US EPA
