Ecoregions: Pre-Wisconsinan Drift Plains

Pre-Wisconsinan Drift Plains Ecoregion shown in Tan

The Pre-Wisconsinan Drift Plains ecoregion is different from surrounding ecoregions because it contains deeply-leached, acidic, pre-Wisconsinan till and thin loess (fine, wind-deposited material). The Wisconsinan glaciation occurred between 75,000 and 110,000 years ago, so these are very old soils. There are also widespread areas of nearly flat, very poorly-drained soils with fragipans (dense soil layers that restrict water infiltration and root penetration). Now largely agricultural, the area was once dominated by beech forests and elm-ash swamp forests. Streams in this ecoregion tend to be faster-moving and more biodiverse than those in the High Lime Till Plains. Source: US EPA
